What is Apple’s hesitation with adding a touchscreen to a Mac?
No Touchscreen on Mac? It’s Probably Because of the iPad
Over the past few years, so many updates have improved the iMac and MacBook and made the devices a force to be reckoned with. For example, the MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips offers incredible performance and battery life.
Yet, there’s still no touchscreen. The closest the Mac ever came was the Touch Bar, which was something of a dramatic failure for Apple.
Recently, Apple executives spoke to the Wall Street Journal about their choice to forgo the touchscreen on Mac. John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, had the following to say during the interview:
There are, of course, other reasons why a touchscreen Mac may or may not be a part of Apple’s future releases.
Way back in 2010, Steve Jobs said the following during a product release, as reported by Business Insider:
The iPad is your best bet for touchscreen capabilities. In fact, it’s a computer in and of itself. It’s fast and loaded with Mac-like capabilities, as well as your favorite Apple apps.
Plus, it’s portable and can be used with a keyboard if you so desire.
What’s Next for the Mac? Only Time Will Tell
It’s true that Apple has never released an official statement regarding whether a touchscreen on the Mac is part of future plans.
If you’re anxiously waiting for such a thing, you can make do for now by using an iPad coupled with your Mac. It’s seriously the best of both worlds.
